Transform your home with an extension
Moving is expensive and disruptive. A lot of Palmerston North families are better off extending the home they already have. A bedroom for a growing family. An ensuite off the master. A home office that’s actually separate from the rest of the house. A larger living area that gives everyone more room to breathe.
Revive Building design and build extensions across Palmerston North. We handle everything so you don’t have to piece it together yourself.
How the Extension Process Works
Free In-Home Consultation
We come to you. Jono looks at the existing house, the section, and the area you're thinking of extending into. We talk through what you're after, what the section allows, and what's realistic within your budget.
Design and Planning
An extension needs to feel like it was always there. So we think hard about how it connects to the existing structure, where the light lands, and how the whole thing flows together.
Quote
Once the design is signed off, we put together a detailed quote so there are no surprises down the track. From there we'll walk you through what happens next, including what's needed to get things moving with the council.
The Build
Once consent is issued, we start. You can track progress through our online project management system anytime and we'll be in regular contact throughout.
Code Compliance Certificate
At the end of the build, we organise the council inspection and obtain the Code Compliance Certificate.

House Extension FAQ
What is a house extension?
A house extension is a permanent structural addition to an existing home, increasing its floor area and living space. Extensions range from a single bedroom or ensuite addition to a substantial two-storey addition. In New Zealand, all house extensions require a building consent from your local council before any work can begin.
How much does an extension cost in Palmerston North?
The cost depends on size, structural complexity, materials, and how much the extension needs to integrate with the existing building. Older homes sometimes have foundations or framing that require additional work. We can give you a realistic figure after we’ve looked at your home. Request an estimate.
Do you need building consent for a house extension in NZ?
Yes. All house extensions in New Zealand require a building consent from your local council, in this case Palmerston North City Council.
That includes preparing the necessary documentation, working with a structural engineer where required, lodging an application, and liaising with the council. Consent approval typically takes 3–6 weeks depending on the project. We factor this into your timeline from the start.
Can I live in my home during an extension?
Usually yes. Extensions are typically built outside the existing living space, which means you can stay in the house while the work happens. There will be some disruption (noise, access through certain areas of the section, temporary protection of existing walls) but it’s usually manageable. We can talk through the specifics for your project.
How do I know if my section can accommodate an extension?
It depends on your section size, the setback rules that apply to your property zone, and any covenants on the title. There are also structural considerations, including what the existing foundations can support and whether the ground conditions are straightforward. We can assess all of this during the free consultation, before you commit to anything.
Does the extension need to match the existing house?
It doesn’t have to be identical, but it should feel considered. We will design the extension to complement what’s already there, matching cladding profiles, rooflines, and window proportions where it makes sense.
